FIRE & SMOKE DAMPERS

For NZ & AUS Buildings

Price Holyoake’s extensive range of low-leakage fire and smoke dampers helps prevent the spread of fire and smoke through ductwork and HVAC systems across New Zealand and Australia. With a wide range of vertical and horizontal solutions, tested and rated to Australian and New Zealand Building Code requirements, we can meet the needs of almost any project. Our technical expertise, training services and early-stage project support also enable us to develop bespoke solutions for challenging applications.

Types of Fire and Smoke Dampers

Fire and smoke dampers serve distinct functions under the New Zealand Building Code and the National Construction Code of Australia. Selecting the correct type depends on the barrier type, the HVAC system design, and the required protection level.

Fire dampers are passive devices that close automatically on detection of heat via a fusible link rated at 72°C, preventing fire spreading through duct penetrations in fire-rated walls and floors. The IBD-FS curtain-type fire damper is designed for these applications.

Smoke dampers are active devices that close on receipt of a signal from a fire alarm or BMS, containing smoke movement before temperatures rise. The HCD-ET elevated temperature smoke damper is suited to demanding smoke control applications.

Combined fire and smoke dampers perform both functions from a single installed unit. The HFS and LR models are certified for combined fire and smoke duty.

NZ Building Code and Australian Standards Compliance

Fire and smoke dampers installed in New Zealand must comply with NZ Building Code Clause C3 (Spread of Fire), which governs the control of fire and smoke movement through ventilation systems. In Australia, the equivalent requirements are set out in the National Construction Code (NCC) and referenced standard AS 1668.1 (The use of ventilation and air conditioning in buildings — fire and smoke control).

All Holyoake fire and smoke dampers are tested to:

  • AS 1530.4:2014 — Fire resistance tests on building materials and structures
  • AS 1530.7:2007 — Smoke control door and shutter assemblies (smoke leakage)
  • AS 1682.1:2015 — Fire dampers for air-handling systems (performance requirements)

The HFS and IBD-FS models achieve a Fire Resistance Rating (FRR) of –/240/– (four-hour integrity). LR damper ratings vary by model size and installation type — refer to the individual product page for full FRR data.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a fire damper and a smoke damper?

Fire dampers are designed to stop the spread of flames by closing when exposed to high heat, while smoke dampers help limit the movement of smoke through the ductwork and building ventilation system.

Are Holyoake fire and smoke dampers compliant with the NZ Building Code?

Yes. All Holyoake fire and smoke dampers are tested and rated to meet the requirements of NZ Building Code Clause C3 (Spread of Fire) and the Australian NCC, including AS 1530.4:2014, AS 1530.7:2007, and AS 1682.1:2015. Fire Resistance Ratings and leakage classifications are documented in the BPIR datasheets available on each product page.

Which Holyoake fire damper do I specify for a rectangular duct penetrating a fire wall?

For rectangular duct applications requiring both fire and smoke duty, the HFS motorised fire and smoke damper is the primary recommendation. The IBD-FS curtain-type fire damper is suited where a compact, low-profile installation is required. Use the Damper Selection Programme to confirm the correct model for your construction type and duct dimensions.

Which fire damper is recommended for circular ductwork?

The LR fire and smoke damper is specifically engineered for circular ductwork. It covers all four damper functions — fire, combined fire and smoke, smoke, and smoke exhaust — and installs without sealant or fixings via a patented clamping system.

Can I download Revit files for Holyoake fire and smoke dampers?

Yes. Revit files (.rfa) are available for all models — HFS, IBD-FS (four mounting configurations: AV, AH, BV, BH), LR, and HCD-ET. Download links are on the Resources tab of each product page.
